Greetings!

Firstly, we would like to welcome the new students to IU! And of course, welcome the returning students back!

We are looking forward to this next academic year. We would like to happily announce that MSA Bloomington have doubled their number this past summer!!!! Welcome to the family newbies :)

Just a quick announcement, your 2009-2010 academic year MSA committee members can be reached personally, via email, or call. Informations are provided on the right sidebar under "MSA Committee Members". If you have any questions, comment, or just simply homesick, don't hesitate to email any of us. We always look forward to providing our best hospitalities and help.

As the year begins, the activities also does. So, keep checking out our blog as well as Facebook group for updates and upcoming events.

Lastly, we would like to wish all the Muslims in MSA, Bloomington, and around the world a Ramadan Mubarak.

Hey guys,

Great job for yesterday's Coffee Hour! It was a huge success, just look at the number of people who showed up! Thank you all for your support, be it showing up in your traditional clothing or just dropping by and help out! I really appreciate it!

And most of all, this wouldn't happen without the help of these people, so here's a special dedication to you!!!

Raof - for running errands and providing the much needed help (your karipap dough made it after all :p)

Najee and Jua - bravo to our karipap chefs!!! they were so good that they sold out within 1/2 hour!!!

Atiqah - chef kuih bakar and our karipap supervisor! (sorry that there aren't any kuih bakar leftover from the event, i was actually expecting some leftover karipaps too...>.<) Ikrom - our chef sirap bandung, and ahmad (just kidding!) for the much needed transportation

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Dear MSA members,

In conjunction of the Chinese New Year (Year of Ox) celebration, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Chinese MOOOO Year! May you all have a prosperous and wonderful year ahead!

Just a couple of reminders and announcements:

1. MSA Chinese New Year Makan-makan:-

The title is self-explanatory. It will be on the 6th of Feb, next Friday, at Campus View Apartment's activity room, from 6.30 till 9pm. We are catering from some Chinese restaurant (most probably Chow Bar), but as usual, any Malaysian hospitality is always welcomed. Hope to see you guys there!

2. Chinese Student Association Spring Festival:-

The Chinese Student Association will be having a Chinese New Year celebration at IU Auditorium on 31st of January, which is this coming Saturday. Doors open at 7.30pm and there will be free food and performances. (Pretty awesome ones, I heard). They are looking for volunteers to help serve food on that day, so to those who are interested in helping out, please let me know ASAP. They need approximately 8 people, and since I am volunteering myself, I am looking for 7 other fellow Malaysians to join in the fun. No obligations though. Not feeling like volunteering? Then just drop by for the food, performances and the atmosphere! =)

3. Taiwanese Students Association Lunar New Year Celebration + Night markets:-

Again, this will be a free food event which will be held this coming Friday, 30th January at Flame Room, McNutt Residence Center. There is a twist in this event; for those who are sick of the same old Chinese food, TWSA is offering a variety of night market foods and some traditional Taiwanese snacks, fun night market games, and an exclusive fortune telling booth. Besides that, first 50 guests have the chance of winning "Lucky Money", so don't miss this out! Event starts at 5pm.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your help and support for last night's MSA Get-Together event. What a great way to kick-start the year for MSA ei? I hope those who attended had fun, and for the new students, hope you all gained something through the advices or experience shared with other fellow Malaysians. It is really nice to see everyone back in town and catching up with each other. =)

Since classes are starting soon, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone all the best! Good luck, and please keep in touch (and get involved) with our future MSA activities. We will send a mass email soon regarding our upcoming events. Hope to see you all soon!

Hello everyone,

Happy 2009! Hope all of you had an awesome New Year celebration and a great winter break. Seems like we have less than a week till we kick start a brand new semester, so the MSA committee would like to invite you all to our get-together event on Saturday, January 10th before everyone starts getting busy. This will be a good opportunity for everyone to do some catch-ups, besides introducing our MSA community to the new students.

Details of the event:-

Date: 10th January 2009 (Saturday)
Venue: Tulip Tree Apartments, room 403
Time: 5pm - 9pm

This will be a pot-luck event; though it is not compulsory to bring anything, we could appreciate some Malaysian hospitality here. ;)

Newcomers alert! : Who(s), Where(s) and How(s)?

To all new students coming here for the Spring 2009 semester, here are some guidelines for you:

1. Who to contact?

First of all, congratulations on making it to the Malaysian Student Association website! If you are a new student coming in for the Spring 09 semester, please contact Raof (aa27@indiana.edu) or May (szefoo@indiana.edu) to inform us about your arrival. On top of it, we are more than willing to assist you in any other questions that you have, be it regarding accommodation, transportation or even life in IU itself. (One of the most common question we get is how to get to the campus, so if you are facing that problem, do let us know and we’ll see how we could help.)

Besides MSA, you could get additional information from Indiana University’s International Service Center’s website at the following link:

Office of International Services

New (Spring 09) students by now should have already set up their IU email account. Please check your inbox regularly as you will receive important instructions from the university from time to time regarding your arrival and orientation. There is contact information on the website above which might come in handy if you encounter any problems.

2. How to get there?

If you're heading to Bloomington from Indianapolis International Airport, there are several shuttle services that will bring you to the campus:

Bloomington Shuttle Service ($25 one way)
Bloomington Limousine Service
Star of America ($15 one way)

From the airport, just head to the Ground Transportation Center on the first floor of the parking garage. You may want to check the schedules for the shuttles ahead of time (they can be found on the links above). If you have any question regarding where you should drop off, again, please do not hesitate to send us an email. (Seriously, let us know when and where you are arriving, so we could arrange a meeting with you, or even arrange a ride for you; no promises though, but we'll try our best)

3. Where to stay?

i. Temporary housing

There is a variety of temporary housings to choose from in Bloomington which are both affordable and comfortable:

ii. On/Off-Campus housing
Students coming in as freshmen are required to stay in the dorms (there are exceptions under certain circumstances); and as for transfer students who are 19 years and above, they can choose to stay in on-campus housing, or in off campus apartments, whichever suits them.

4. Where to keep my money?

Banks are easy to find in Bloomington, and you don’t have to worry about running out of cash, as there are plenty of ATMs around. Amongst the long list of banks available in Bloomington are as follows:

... dan Selamat Datang to the temporary site of Indiana University Malaysian Student Association's (MSA) site. While our official MSA website is still under construction, this BlogSpot site will be your ultimate resource to get the latest updates and news from us. We apologize for any inconvenience, and we are trying our best to get our official website up and running. Thank you for your patience.

A little bit about us:

The Malaysian community in Bloomington is a strong 50 with three families and plenty of undergraduates and graduate students. There isn't a big Malaysian community in Bloomington; our current database shows that there are only approximately 50 Malaysians here (including families). Although we are small in numbers, we are active in getting our MSA’s name out. Despite of our small numbers, we all know each other and most importantly, of each other's existence in the community. Since we do not have a lot of members, all of us know each other; we often hang out - this helped us get rid of our homesickness. Some of the activities we organized/participated included makan-makan gatherings for Hari Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali, IU's World Fare and Malaysian Student Department's (MSD) annual Midwest Games. As our number increases, we will be more actively involved in events organized by IU and hopefully, we may even plan some activities on our own.

To New Students:

We are looking forward to meet any new (Malaysian) students/visitors who are coming to IUB. Just send us an email and we will include you into our mailing list. Do feel free to send us any inquiries, and we will help assist you with the best Malaysian hospitality we could provide. There is also a chat box on the bottom right where you could use to communicate with the current or new IUB students/residents.

For those who are joining us for the Spring 2009 semester, please send an email to Raof (aa27@indiana.edu) or May (szefoo@indiana.edu). To assure that we are providing our best hospitalities, we would really appreciate your cooperations in helping us gather informations of the incoming students. We really appreciate you in helping us gather the information of the new incoming Malaysian students, and at the same time, we are more than willing to help in matters regarding your arrival to IUB.

Spring 2009:

Our first event for the 2009 spring semester will be a makan-makan gathering on the 10th of January 2009. Time and place is will be announced closer to date.
